ACA Open Enrollment is just around the corner. If you’ll be shopping for individual or family health insurance through the Marketplace for 2027, now is a good time to understand what may look different this year.

While the basic structure of ACA Marketplace coverage remains familiar, there are some important things to know before Open Enrollment begins.

Premium Tax Credits Are Still Available, but the Enhanced Subsidies Are Still Gone

Premium tax credits are still available to help eligible households lower the cost of Marketplace coverage in 2027.

Even if your income hasn't changed, don't assume your financial assistance or monthly premium will be the same for 2027.

The Metal Tiers Aren’t Going Away

metal levels will still be available for 2027. These categories indicate how you and your insurance plan generally share healthcare costs; they aren't ratings of the quality of care.

Plans within the same metal level can still differ in their premiums, deductibles, copayments, provider networks, prescription coverage, and other details. When Open Enrollment begins, look beyond the metal level and compare how each plan would work for your healthcare needs and budget.

          Cost-Sharing Reductions Are Still Available

Cost-sharing reductions, or CSRs, are also sticking around. These additional savings can help eligible consumers lower out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums.

          Many ACA Protections Haven’t Changed

Despite these changes, many of the fundamentals of Marketplace coverage remain the same.

ACA-compliant Marketplace plans still cover essential health benefits, and insurers generally cannot deny you coverage or charge you more because of a pre-existing health condition.

You'll also still be able to compare plans based on premiums, deductibles, provider networks, prescription coverage, and other out-of-pocket costs.

How Indemnity Insurance Fills a Medicare Gap

A hospital stay can leave you with significant out-of-pocket costs, even if you’re enrolled in Medicare. The bills can surprise you: a five-day stay might trigger copayments totaling hundreds or even thousands of dollars. If you're hospitalized again later in the year, you may face another round of costs, depending on how your plan is structured.

The simplest way to safeguard against these expenses is with hospital indemnity insurance. This supplemental coverage pays you cash benefits for a qualifying hospital stay. It doesn't replace Medicare or Medicare Advantage, but works alongside your primary coverage to help offset costs that you would otherwise pay out of pocket.

          How the Costs Add Up

A hospital stay can hit your wallet hard. The degree of impact depends on what kind of Medicare coverage you have.

Original Medicare with No Supplement (Medigap) Plan

This would be the highest risk scenario for hefty hospital bills. On Original Medicare, you first pay a Part A deductible of $1,736 if hospitalized (2026 amount). If you’re still in the hospital after 60 days, you then owe coinsurance of $434 per day for days 61–90, and $868 per day for days 91–150. It’s also important to know you can end up paying that Part A deductible multiple times in the same calendar year, if more than 60 days have passed between hospitalizations, which triggers the start of a new benefit period.

This scenario can make a big difference. Your hospital bill would be similar to what’s described above, but with a Medigap plan you would get some important assistance with the deductible and coinsurance. Most Medigap plans cover all or some of the Part A deductible, and they all cover Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up.

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans structure hospital costs differently. Rather than a large upfront deductible, many MA plans require daily copayments for the first several days of a hospital stay. A typical structure might be $350 per day for days 1 through 5. While MA plans offer a maximum out-of-pocket limit (no more than $9,250 in-network in 2026, though some have lower limits), that cap only applies after you've paid all your costs up to that point. That cap also doesn’t include prescription drug costs, which have their own separate limits.

          How Hospital Indemnity Insurance Works

Hospital indemnity insurance pays you a fixed cash benefit when you're admitted to the hospital. Unlike traditional health insurance that pays providers, indemnity benefits go straight to you, regardless of what Medicare or your MA plan covers. That means you can decide how to use the money.

Most plans pay a lump sum benefit when you're admitted to the hospital—the amount varies by plan. Many policies also pay a daily benefit for each day you remain hospitalized. Some plans include additional benefits for services such as ambulance transportation, observation stays, intensive care, skilled nursing care, outpatient surgery, or certain diagnostic procedures. The benefit amounts are determined when you enroll.

As an example, if your indemnity plan pays $1,500 on admission, you would receive $1,500 in cash upon hospitalization, to use however you need: to help cover your deductible or copays, to pay for travel costs, replace lost income, or shore up household expenses while you recover.

Key Features of Hospital Indemnity Plans

One of the biggest advantages of these plans is flexibility:

           No deductible or copays.

You don't have to satisfy a deductible before benefits kick in, and the coverage itself doesn't carry copayments.

           No network requirements.

You can be hospitalized anywhere—in-network or out-of-network—and still receive your benefit.

           Benefits paid directly to you.

The money goes into your own account, and you decide how to use it.

This kind of coverage is valuable for retirees who want to avoid drawing down retirement savings to pay for an unexpected hospital bill.

          How Benefits Are Structured

Hospital indemnity plans offer several benefit options:

          Admission benefit:

A fixed lump sum is paid after the first day of your hospital entry, often ranging from $500 to $2,000 depending on the plan.

          Daily confinement benefit:

A set rate for each day you remain admitted, often ranging from $100 to $500 per day. For a five-day stay, this could provide $500 to $2,500 in benefits alone.

          ICU rider:

If you're placed in intensive care, some plans offer higher daily rates for those days, often at an elevated amount compared to the standard daily rate.

          Additional riders:

Some plans also pay fixed benefits for skilled nursing facility stays, ambulance transport, or observation stays that don't result in a full hospitalization.

          Maximum limits:

Plans usually cap the total number of payout days per year, such as 30, 60, or 90 days. Once you hit that maximum, benefits stop for that year (though the limit typically resets on January 1).

Because these rules vary significantly, it's important to review the policy carefully for benefit-period definitions, maximum payouts, and other requirements.

Is This Coverage Right for You?

Not every Medicare beneficiary may need indemnity insurance. The answer will depend on your scenario. Consider copayments and cost-sharing requirements under your current coverage, whether you have Original Medicare with Medigap or a Medicare Advantage plan. Ask yourself: How comfortably could you handle a hospital bill? If you had a five-day hospitalization requiring daily copayments of $350, could you absorb $1,750 plus any other costs? What if you were hospitalized twice or more in a year?

If a large hospital bill would strain your budget or force you to pull money from your retirement savings, then an indemnity policy may be the right choice to give you a financial cushion. That added peace of mind may be more than worth the cost of the plan, especially if you’re a retiree living on a fixed income, if you don’t have supplemental Medigap coverage, or if you have a chronic condition that is more likely to lead to hospitalization.

What to Watch for in 2027 Based on Two Years of Changes

For nearly two decades, Medicare Advantage plans grew steadily, becoming the choice for more than half of all Medicare beneficiaries. But starting in 2025, that season of growth reached its apex. The past two years have brought significant changes. Some plans have cut benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage. Some insurers have pulled out of entire counties. As a result, millions of beneficiaries have had to shop for new coverage.

If you're on a Medicare Advantage plan, these last two years reveal an important pattern, and it's helpful to understand this as you prepare to look at 2027 plans this month. Read below to learn more about what's been happening and why, plus what to watch for as enrollment season kicks off.

The total number of Medicare Advantage plans available nationally declined 10 percent last year, dropping from over 3,700 in 2025 to under 3,400 plans in 2026. Nearly 3 million people with Medicare Advantage plans (about 10 percent of all enrollees) had to find alternative coverage as some health insurers exited markets and scaled back plan options.

The largest insurers led the pullbacks. UnitedHealthcare reduced its coverage in 109 counties, while Humana decreased presence in 194 counties. In some regions, the disruption was more severe. In 122 counties across 13 states, approximately 391,000 beneficiaries lost access to any Medicare Advantage plan at all. Vermont experienced the most dramatic shift: 92.2 percent of Medicare Advantage enrollees in the state had to find alternative coverage. Other rural states were hit hard too: Wyoming now has just three Medicare Advantage-Prescription Drug plans available, South Dakota has four, and Minnesota also saw dramatic reductions.

The changes described here were the second year of a broader trend. So what are the underlying drivers of these changes and what should you do about it?

          Why This Is Happening

The root cause centers around profitability. Federal policy changes that aimed to reduce overpayments resulted in lower reimbursement rates from the government to insurers. Meanwhile, following the pandemic, beneficiaries began seeking healthcare they postponed, which drove up medical costs faster than insurers had projected. The combination squeezed profit margins across the industry.

In response, the industry shifted rapidly from prioritizing enrollment growth to prioritizing profitability. The financial pressure remains to this day. CMS projects a 2.48 percent average rate increase for 2027—higher than initially proposed, but still lower than what many insurers need to sustain robust benefit packages. That's why the pattern we've seen these last two years is likely to continue.

          What We've Seen Plans Do

Over the past two years, beneficiaries have experienced several types of changes:

          Benefit reductions.

For example, Aetna, Elevance, and UnitedHealthcare have cut allowances for over-the-counter health and wellness items. UnitedHealthcare and Humana cut OTC benefits for special needs plans. Some deductibles have risen on prescription drugs and medical services.

          Network changes.

Plans are shifting away from Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans, which offer more provider choice. They're prioritizing HMO designs (health maintenance organizations), which have more limited networks.

          Geographic targeting.

While some carriers expand into select markets, they simultaneously exit others, choosing to focus on areas where they can maintain better margins. Some insurers have pulled out of certain counties or even entire states. This is especially common in rural areas, where profitability is harder to achieve.

Who Should Be Paying Closest Attention

Seniors living in rural areas should pay particular attention. Over the past two years, rural beneficiaries have been disproportionately affected by plan terminations. While rural residents comprise only 14 percent of typical Medicare Advantage enrollees, they represented nearly 23 percent of those whose plans were terminated in 2025.

Certain states have seen more disruption than others. Vermont, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Maryland, and New Hampshire all saw more than 40 percent of their Medicare Advantage enrollees forced to switch plans between 2025 and 2026.

What to Watch for this Month

Even before CMS releases 2027 plan details in mid-October, there are some important things you can do to prepare:

Review your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) statement.

You should have received this in September. Don't just glance at the plan name and assume everything is the same.

           Look for benefit changes.

Check whether dental, vision, or hearing benefits have changed. Are OTC allowances being reduced? Has your prescription drug deductible increased? Are out-of-pocket maximums higher?

           Examine network changes.

Did your plan shift from a PPO to an HMO? Are the doctors and hospitals you use still in-network? This is a critical detail that's easy to miss.

Keep your eyes out for a termination notice.

Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and other carriers signaled they may make additional plan exits this year. When a plan exits a county, the carrier is required to send impacted members a notice at least 60 days prior. So be sure to open all mail from your current plan, especially if you live in a rural area, in case you receive a notice of plan termination.

If your plan does change or exit your area, remember this: you have guaranteed rights. If a Medicare Advantage plan terminates, you can enroll in any Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plan without being denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions, usually for up to 63 days after your coverage ends.

It's also helpful to keep in mind that the changes don't impact everyone. The majority of Medicare beneficiaries still have the same access to multiple Medicare Advantage plans with a range of benefits.

The Medicare Advantage market has shifted. The days of predictable plans with expanding benefits may be behind us. But understanding the patterns of change and watching for communications puts you in control of your plan.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced that it is ending a temporary program that helped keep premiums more stable for participating Part D drug plans. The program was called the

          What Is Changing?

Medicare made major changes to the Part D prescription drug benefit beginning in 2025. During that transition, CMS created a temporary program to help participating standalone Part D plans manage some of the financial impact and limit large year-to-year premium increases.

For 2026, the program provided participating plans with additional financial assistance and limited how much their total Part D premiums could increase from the previous year.

CMS has now decided that this temporary assistance is no longer needed, so the program will end after 2026, rather than running through 2027 as was originally anticipated. That means Part D plans will set their 2027 premiums without the additional help provided by this temporary program.

           Ending the program does

mean everyone's Part D premium will increase. The impact will vary from one plan to another.

To find out whether this change affects you, and by how much, it's important to look at the Part D plans available for 2027 and compare them with your 2026 coverage. Start with the monthly premium, but don't stop there. Changes in deductibles, prescription costs, covered medications and pharmacy networks can all affect what you ultimately pay.

In other words, a higher premium doesn't necessarily mean a plan will cost you more overall, and a lower premium doesn't necessarily mean it will be the least expensive choice for you. What matters is how the plan covers the medications you take and the pharmacies you use.

Although this temporary program is ending, it doesn't mean all federal measures intended to help control Part D premium increases are going away. Other protections remain in place that limit how quickly certain costs used to calculate Part D premiums can rise from year to year.

However, those protections don't put a cap on how much your individual plan's premium can change. That's why it's still important to focus on the details of the plans available to you and compare your 2027 costs and coverage with what you had in 2026.

As you review it, don't look at the premium alone. A plan with a lower monthly premium could end up costing you more if the medications you take are more expensive under that plan or if the deductible has increased. Likewise, changes to a plan's formulary, deductible or pharmacy network could have a significant impact on your overall costs.

For the past few years, extra financial help lowered monthly premiums for people who buy coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. That help was called the enhanced premium tax credit. It started in 2021 and ran through the end of 2025. It expired on January 1, 2026.

When it expired, the older rules came back. One of those rules is the "subsidy cliff."

The subsidy cliff is an income cutoff. Under the current rules, if your household income goes above 400% of the federal poverty level, you no longer qualify for a premium tax credit. Not a smaller credit. No credit at all.

The exact cutoff depends on your household size. For 2026, it is approximately $62,600 for a single person and $84,600 for a two-person household. Earn a dollar over that line, and you could be responsible for the full health insurance premium on your own.

That's why people call it a "cliff". Stay just under the line, and you may get help. Go just over it, and the help can disappear.

Older, middle-income people have generally felt it the most. There are two reasons for that. First, they tend to sit closer to that income line. Second, premiums rise with age.

Here's a real example from the Bipartisan Policy Center. A 60-year-old couple earning about $85,000 a year sits at roughly 402% of the poverty level. That puts them just over the cliff. Their estimated yearly premium for 2026 could reach about $22,600. That's close to a quarter of their income. Under the enhanced credits, their cost would have been capped near 8.5% of income.

The enrollment numbers tell the same story. People earning just above the cliff, between 400% and 500% of the poverty level, made up only 3% of 2025 sign-ups. But they accounted for 27% of the decrease in sign-ups from 2025 to 2026, according to KFF. Many looked at the new price and walked away.

          What This Means for You

Marketplace credits are calculated from the income you report, so if you end up earning more than you estimated and cross the 400% line, you may have to pay some of those credits back at tax time. For 2026, that risk is bigger than it used to be. Recent law removed some of the caps that once limited how much certain enrollees had to repay.

This is why small income changes can matter so much near the cliff. A raise, a year-end bonus, or a stretch of extra freelance work could be enough to push you over the line and significantly change what you owe.

Some people move to a plan with a higher deductible to bring down the monthly cost. That trade-off works for some budgets and not others, so look at the full picture of all your costs (monthly premiums, anticipated out-of-pocket medical costs, etc.).

Congress has been debating whether to bring the enhanced credits back. The House passed a three-year extension in early 2026, and lawmakers have floated several other versions with different income limits and rules. As of now, nothing has been finalized, and the rules could still change. For the latest, check HealthCare.gov or your state's Marketplace.

When you shop for coverage on the Health Insurance Marketplace, every plan is sorted into one of four categories, often called "metal levels": Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. A fifth category, Catastrophic, is available to some people. If the names make it sound like a ranking from worst to best, that is worth clearing up right away.

What the Metal Levels Actually Mean

The metal levels have nothing to do with the quality of care you receive. According to HealthCare.gov, the categories are based on one thing: how you and your plan split the costs of your care.

Each level reflects the average share of covered costs the plan is designed to pay versus the share you pay. Here is how those shares break down, based on the official estimates from HealthCare.gov:

Bronze: The plan pays about 60% and you pay about 40%. Deductibles are generally high. Monthly premiums are generally lower.

Silver: The plan pays about 70% and you pay about 30%. Deductibles are generally moderate. Monthly premiums are moderate.

Gold: The plan pays about 80% and you pay about 20%. Deductibles are generally low. Monthly premiums are higher.

Platinum: The plan pays about 90% and you pay about 10%. Deductibles are generally low. Monthly premiums are the highest.

These percentages are averages across a large group of people, not a promise about any single medical bill. The general trade-off holds across every level: lower monthly premiums tend to come with higher costs when you actually need care, and higher premiums tend to come with lower costs at the point of care.

A Closer Look at Each Tier

Bronze plans carry the lowest monthly premiums and the highest out-of-pocket costs. They tend to suit people who are generally healthy, expect few medical needs during the year, and mainly want protection against a major or unexpected event.

Silver plans sit in the middle on both premiums and out-of-pocket costs. They also carry a feature that sets them apart, which we cover later on.

Gold plans have higher monthly premiums but lower costs when you use care. They can be a strong fit if you visit providers often, take regular medications, or expect ongoing treatment.

Platinum plans have the highest premiums and the lowest costs at the point of care. They tend to make financial sense mainly for people who know they will use a significant amount of care. Platinum plans are not offered in every area.

Here is a point that surprises many shoppers. No matter which metal level you choose, every Marketplace plan must cover the same set of 10 essential health benefits. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services lists these categories as:

All plans also cover recommended preventive services at no cost to you when you use a provider in your plan's network. Specific covered services can vary somewhat by state and plan, so it is always worth reviewing a plan's Summary of Benefits and Coverage before you enroll.

Why Silver Plans Deserve Extra Attention

Silver plans come with a benefit the other levels do not offer. If your income qualifies you for cost-sharing reductions, sometimes called "extra savings," you can only receive them by enrolling in a Silver plan.

These savings lower what you pay for deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. For those who qualify, a Silver plan's share of costs can rise well above the standard 70%, reaching as high as 96% depending on your income. In practical terms, that means a Silver plan can deliver Gold or Platinum level cost protection while keeping a Silver level premium.

Some people qualify for financial assistance when shopping for Marketplace plans, and that help comes in two forms.

The premium tax credit lowers your monthly premium. You can apply it to a plan in any metal level if you qualify.

Cost-sharing reductions lower your out-of-pocket costs when you get care. These apply only to Silver plans.

If you think you might qualify for financial assistance, give us a call. We can help you understand your savings options. You can also find out whether you qualify for either type of help when you complete your Marketplace application.

          What About Catastrophic Plans?

Catastrophic coverage is a fifth option available to a narrower group: people under 30, and people 30 or older who qualify for a hardship or affordability exemption. These plans feature very low premiums and very high deductibles, and they still cover the same 10 essential health benefits. New for the 2026 plan year, HealthCare.gov notes that more plans, including Bronze and Catastrophic options, can be paired with a Health Savings Account so you can set aside pre-tax money for qualified medical expenses.

How to Pick the Level That Fits Your Situation

Choosing well comes down to looking past the premium and thinking about your total yearly spending. A few questions to work through:

How much care do you realistically expect this year, including doctor visits, prescriptions, and any planned procedures?

Could you comfortably cover a high deductible if something unexpected happened?

Do you qualify for a premium tax credit, cost-sharing reductions, or both?

If you expect minimal care and want the lowest monthly cost, a Bronze plan may fit. If you want a balance, or you qualify for extra savings, Silver is often the better value. If you use care frequently, Gold or Platinum can lower what you pay when it counts. Remember that the cheapest premium is not always the cheapest plan once you add in what you might pay when you actually need care.

What Your Annual Notice of Change Really Means for You

Every fall, if you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan, you'll receive an important piece of mail: the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC. Many people glance at the envelope, assume it's routine paperwork, and tuck it away in a drawer, but this is a letter worth reviewing.

Your ANOC is your plan's official preview of what will change starting January 1 of the coming year. By law, plans must deliver it to you no later than September 30 each year, which gives you time to review it before Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period begins on October 15. Inside, you'll typically find details about premiums, drug coverage, copayments and coinsurance, provider networks, and any coverage changes starting January 1.

Why This Letter Deserves Your Attention

Many people assume that if you've been happy with your plan all year, then you don’t need to do anything and nothing will change. But Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are permitted to adjust their costs and coverage from one year to the next. The monthly premium might go up or down, a medication you've taken for years may move to a different cost tier or no longer be covered at all, or prior approval may now be required. A doctor or specialist you see regularly may no longer be part of the plan's network.

These changes do not require your permission and can significantly impact your coverage. Reviewing your ANOC carefully gives you a critical head start, allowing you to identify specific concerns or areas to address, such as network or formulary changes, before annual enrollment arrives. This ensures that when it comes time to sit down with us after October 1 for your Medicare review, you and your agent can focus on evaluating the aspects of your plan that you already know need your attention.

The ANOC covers more ground than most people expect. Along with monthly premiums and annual deductibles, it can outline new copayment or coinsurance amounts for doctor visits, specialist care, and hospital stays. It will also show whether your medications have moved to a different cost tier, been removed from the formulary altogether, or gained a new requirement like prior authorization or step therapy. Provider and pharmacy networks can change, too, meaning a doctor or pharmacy you rely on today might not be included next year. Even the maximum amount you'd pay out of pocket in a year, and benefits like dental, vision, or hearing can be adjusted, expanded, or reduced. The plan may even add new, additional supplemental benefits in the coming year.

Consider a longtime Medicare Advantage enrollee named Margaret, who was satisfied with her plan, didn’t open her ANOC, and let her enrollment automatically renew during annual enrollment. It wasn’t until January that she realized her monthly premium had gone up slightly, and more importantly, a maintenance medication she'd taken for years had moved to a higher cost tier. She also discovered that one of her regular specialists was no longer in the plan's network. Had she caught these changes in October, she would have had time to compare plans and talk with a licensed agent before the Annual Enrollment Period closed. But now she was locked into her plan for the rest of the year.

The envelope will likely be marked with something like "Important Plan Information” or may be labeled “Annual Notice of Change.” Open it and read through the entire letter. Many ANOCs include a side-by-side comparison of this year's plan details versus next year's. Pay close attention to four things in particular: your premium, your specific medications, the providers you see most often, and the benefits you use most or expect to use in the coming year. If anything has changed in a way that concerns you, that's your cue to explore other options. Starting on October 1, you can work with one of our licensed insurance agents to compare plans and prepare for Annual Enrollment from October 15 - December 7.

The most common mistake is simply not opening the envelope, and assuming that because nothing has gone wrong this year, nothing will change next year. Another is reading only the first page and missing details buried further in, such as formulary or network changes. Some people miss the window and open it too late to take action during the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7. Others focus solely on the premium and overlook drug coverage or network changes, which can end up costing far more over the course of a year.

Your ANOC may look like just another piece of mail, but it's one of the most useful documents Medicare sends you all year. Reading it carefully, checking your premium, your medications, and your providers, and comparing your options can help you make sure you’ve got a plan that truly fits your needs. Don't throw it away, and don't let it sit unopened. A little attention each fall can go a long way toward protecting your healthcare and your budget in the year ahead.

Why Working With a Licensed Insurance Agent Still Matters

Buying insurance online is fast, but a licensed agent can help you compare carriers, understand the fine print, and advocate for you at claim time.

Today, the word "agent" has taken on a new meaning. In an era of instant gratification, getting an insurance quote online or using an AI agent to collect quotes for you has never been easier. With a few simple commands or clicks, you can secure a price in minutes, and in many cases, enroll in a health insurance plan. However, while speed and convenience are undeniable benefits, there is a critical distinction between buying the cheapest or most visible policy and buying the right policy for you. That difference is where a licensed independent insurance agent adds real value. And we mean a human agent. Instant quotes can give you quick and useful information; what they can't do is tell you whether it's actually the right fit for your family, your health, your lifestyle, or your budget.

Whether you're shopping for health insurance, property insurance, or something else, a good insurance agent doesn't start with a product; they start with a conversation. What are your healthcare needs? Do you have children? Are you nearing retirement? Those answers shape a recommendation built around your actual circumstances, rather than a generic set of coverage limits generated by an online form. This personalized needs assessment often reveals gaps you might not have considered.

Many independent agents maintain relationships with a range of carriers. That means they're not tied to selling one company's policies, but they can pull quotes and coverage details from multiple sources and lay them side by side for you. You get a broader view of what's available, along with an explanation of how the coverage, not just the cost, differs from one option to the next. That kind of objective comparison is difficult to get by shopping company by company on your own.

Insurance policies are dense with terminology: exclusions, endorsements, riders, and sublimits, to name just a few. An agent can walk you through what your policy actually covers, what it doesn't, and why certain terms exist, in plain language you can understand. It is far better to understand an exclusion or a term of coverage before you need to rely on your policy, rather than discovering a limitation while in the midst of a crisis.

Filing a claim can be stressful, especially if a major event or emergency has occurred. An agent who knows your policy and your history can help you understand what documentation you'll need, what to expect from the process, and who to contact with questions along the way. Having someone in your corner who can help you navigate that process, rather than facing an unfamiliar claims system entirely on your own, is one of the most valued parts of working with an agent.

Your insurance needs at twenty-five look very different from your needs at forty-five or sixty-five. Getting married, having children, buying a home, starting a business, or heading into retirement can all shift what kind of coverage makes sense. A good agent doesn't just sell a policy and disappear; they check in over time, often around renewals or major life events, to see whether your coverage still fits. That kind of ongoing relationship helps make sure your policies keep pace with your life, rather than staying frozen at whatever made sense years earlier.

There's also something to be said for having a real person to call, someone local who knows your name, your history, and your household, rather than an anonymous chat window. That kind of relationship builds accountability. An agent who lives in your community and has an ongoing relationship with you has a stake in your long-term satisfaction, not just in closing a single sale. And best of all, in the majority of cases, agents are compensated through a commission paid by the insurance carrier, built into the overall cost of the policy, rather than through a separate fee charged to you. So you get the added advantage without any added cost.

A licensed agent can't promise the lowest possible price or a guaranteed outcome every time, and it's worth being cautious of anyone who claims otherwise. What an agent can do is take the time to understand your needs, compare your options, explain the details in plain language, and stand beside you when it matters most, at claim time and as your life changes. Reach out to our team today to get unbiased and experience guidance for your insurance needs.

The findings revealed that consuming two or more 250 ml glasses of soft drinks daily—whether sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened—was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who drank less than one glass per month .

involving 13,440 U.S. adults aged 45 and older found that each additional 12-ounce serving of sugary beverages, including 100% fruit juice, was linked to an 11% higher risk of all-cause mortality. Specifically, each additional 12-ounce serving of fruit juice was associated with a 24% increased risk. Watch the sugar content of iced coffee beverages and alcoholic cocktails as well.

It's essential to note that high soft drink consumption often correlates with other unhealthy lifestyle choices. The IARC study observed that individuals who drank more soft drinks typically had higher body mass indexes and were more likely to smoke. Even after adjusting for factors like diet, physical activity, smoking, and education, the association between soft drink consumption and increased mortality risk remained significant .

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a long-awaited international adventure, setting off on a trip is always exciting—but can also be unpredictable. That’s why preparing for the unexpected, especially when it comes to your health, is essential. Knowing what your medical coverage includes (and doesn’t) while traveling can help you stay healthy, avoid costly surprises, and soak up the unforgettable moments on your journey.

Let’s walk through some proactive steps you can take before packing your bags—from vaccinations and insurance to emergency planning and fraud protection.

          1. Know What Your Health Plan Covers—And Where

Medical surprises aren’t on anyone’s itinerary—but it’s best to be prepared. Start by knowing how your insurance policy covers (or doesn’t) the region you’re traveling to.

          Individual health policyholders,

review your insurer’s network coverage. Some plans only cover in-network or state-specific services, while others offer broader emergency coverage or travel-specific riders. Consult your insurance agent to get help reviewing your policy.

          Medicare beneficiaries,

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) typically doesn’t cover medical care outside the U.S., except in limited circumstances. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it may include emergency and urgent coverage abroad, but this varies by provider. Check your plan’s

          Evidence of Coverage

or speak to your plan representative before traveling.

          2. Consider Supplemental Insurance

If you're a frequent traveler or heading abroad, look into some options to help cover you. Some options include:

           Travel Medical Insurance

: Plans offer emergency coverage during trips outside the U.S. and tend to be affordable.

           Evacuation Insurance

: This covers transport to a qualified medical facility if the nearest care is inadequate. An evacuation clause is often, but not always, included in a travel insurance plan.

           Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

: Some Medigap policies cover emergency care abroad, typically up to plan limits and with a deductible.

           Critical Illness Insurance

: A lump-sum payout can provide financial flexibility in case you’re diagnosed with a covered condition like a heart attack or stroke during travel.

Be sure to read the fine print—some policies require you to be under a certain age, and preexisting conditions may not be covered. Your licensed insurance agent can help talk you through your options.

          3. Keep Your Medical Info Handy

Consider using a secure health app or digital wallet to access all your health records quickly. But just in case your phone is inaccessible, bring physical copies of these important documents as well:

           Your insurance or Medicare cards

Imagine getting a call in the middle of the night from someone claiming to be your grandchild, panicked and in trouble. They say they’ve been in an accident or arrested—and they desperately need money. Your heart races. You’d do anything to help. That’s exactly what scammers are counting on.

          What Is the Grandparent Scam?

These scams usually start with a phone call from someone pretending to be your grandchild (or another close relative). They’ll say they’re in trouble—maybe stuck in jail or in a hospital—and they need money fast for bail, legal fees, or emergency expenses.

To make things even more convincing, they may hand the phone off to someone pretending to be a lawyer or a police officer. And they’ll likely ask you

          not

to tell anyone—saying it’s a “private” or “sensitive” situation.

That sense of urgency is key to the scam. It’s meant to bypass your instinct to double-check and make you act fast—before you have time to think it through or talk to someone else.

Why It Works—and Why It’s Dangerous

These calls often come late at night or early in the morning, when you’re more likely to be caught off guard. The scammer might not even say who they are—just “Grandma, it’s me”—and hope you fill in the blank for them. From there, they use that information to sound more convincing.

Some victims have been asked to send money via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or even in cash via courier—all methods that are difficult or impossible to trace or reverse. According to the FCC, scammers using this method have stolen
